Early Life

She was born in Manhattan (the populated and smallest city) in New York City on November 13, 1955. She was the daughter of Emma Johnson who was a teacher and a nurse and Robert James Johnson Jr. Goldberg was raised in the public Housing project whose name was Chelsea-Elliot House. She called her mother “stern” which means strong and wise woman because her mother raised her as a single mother and with her brother. A local Catholic school attended her and she was also dropped out of Washington Irving High School.

She decided on her stage name as “Whoopi” and this name she claimed in the year 2011.
